Other Payment Options in Thailand : A Guide for Foreign Tourists

Whether you are a tourist or a local, understanding the different payment methods can save you time and avoid some payment issues. Let’s explore each in detail:
Cash: Thailand is undergoing a digital payment transition. But cash is still the most common payment way in the country, particularly for small purchases, street food, local markets, and rural areas. The official currency is the Thai Baht., and cash withdrawals are easy to get from ATMs available in cities and tourist areas. By the way, type of payments are evolving with the increasing of mobile banking, Thai QR payment (PromptPay), and digital wallets such as TrueMoney Wallet, LinePay, etc while debit and credit cards are also widely used.
Debit and credit cards: International credit cards are commonly accepted in most tourist areas. Visa and Mastercard are the two most widely used. Tourists can use their existing cards to make payments at many restaurants, hotels, and retail stores.
Mobile banking: Top-tier banks in Thailand, such as Kasikornbank, Bangkok Bank, Siam Commercial Bank, and Krungthai Bank, provide banking apps that work seamlessly, allowing users to transfer money, pay bills, and check their balances. However, only Thais and expats with a bank account can access their mobile banking systems
e-Wallets: In Thailand, many digital wallets, such as Line Pay, TrueMoney Wallet, and Rabbit Line Pay, are widely used for small purchases, making cashless transactions more convenient.
Thai QR Payments, also known as ‘PromptPay’: Many restaurants, shops, and even local vendors display their PromptPay QR codes to receive payments securely. Both PromptPay and mobile banking apps make each transaction easy for everyone, including foreign tourists.
